Our Pekes Needing Help, or Special Needs dogs,
have come to us with exceptional medical conditions. We do all that
we can for these special dogs. However, quality medical care is
expensive. Our adoption donations barely cover the actual average
costs of routine care for our rescue dogs. Your tax deductible
donations allow us to continue our rescue efforts for them and others that
will certainly follow.
Any donations for a dog that receives more donations than his or her actual medical expenses will be applied to the necessary medical and special care of other Pekes Needing Help. |

Kimmie is a little sweetheart! Playful and loving. She weighs 10.0 lbs and is nearly 2 years old. Kimmie was not given heartworm preventative before coming to us and is heartworm positive. Houston Peke Rescue is treating her for it. Her treatment will cost about $300.00. Can you help pay for her treatment?

I wasn't given heartworm preventative by my former family and now have heartworms. Houston Peke Rescue is having me treated. The treatment costs about $300.00. Can you help pay for the treatment? Thanks.

We named her "Hope". Need I say why! We took her back in a week and she had gained 1 1/2 lbs and another blood test was done. The vet said she would now be able to operate and remove her eye. She also tested heavy heartworm positive and will need to start treatment for that. She is the happiest little girl now weighing in between 12 and 13 pounds. When she wags her tail she wags all over! Hope has an eye appointment with an ophthalmologist on Dec. 15th. Our vet is concerned about how much sight she has in her remaining eye. December 16, 2011: Hope went to her ophthalmologist appointment and Dr. Herrmann said she does have some sight in her remaining eye. Yea!!! He gave us additional medication to use three times a day to try and clear up some of the pigmented keratitis caused by an untreated dry eye condition. She is to go back in three weeks to be reevaluated. She is playing with some of the other rescues and has a very good appetite! Another update soon. To date her blood tests, eye removal, and ophthalmologist exam comes to $450.00. Plus, we'll need an additional $300.00 for heartworm treatment. Please help us meet her expenses! Any help toward meeting Hope's medical expenses will appreciated.

Meet Snowflake! She is one of the bravest little Pekes we have ever known. She was turned in to us in February 2011 by a Good Samaritan. Her skin from the top of her head to the base of her tail was oozing clear fluid and there were nearly solid scabs covering this area. We thought it might be sarcopic mange, so off we go to our rescue vet. She did three skin scrapings to check for mange mites, but none were found. So next she was checked for a yeast infection. She was given a special shampoo to be used every other day, and multiple antibiotics for yeast and her skin infection. We tried this route for three weeks and no improvement was seen. She was constantly turning on her back and wiggling to try and stop the horrible itching. Our rescue vet suggested taking her to an animal dermatologist, which we did. (She is still not showing any fear when she is taken into the vet's surprisingly.) The dermatologist said first she wanted to recheck her for mites, since they can be easily missed. She did a skin scraping and ear and skin cytology on her and prescribed more antibiotics. And also gave her an Ivermectin injection. Two weeks later we took her back for her 2nd Ivermectin injection. Still no improvement. So back she goes to the dermatologist for further evaluation. The vet did a Woods lamp exam, a dermatophyte culture, ear cytology and prescribed more medications and an ointment. The vet said if there was no improvement we would need to decide on whether to have a more expensive test done. At this point, we felt it was only fair to give her a chance for a decent life, especially considering the fact that Snowflake never showed any signs of wanting to give up. Her next visit entailed a deep tissue biopsy to be done while she was anesthetized. The tissue was sent off for Histopathology testing. The results showed two different types of staph infection, resistant to most antibiotics. Snowflake was put on a special all vegetarian dry food and special heart worm preventative pills with no liver flavoring or additives in them. It's now been a month and a day since she went to the dermatologist vet and she is showing a huge improvement in her condition! We never thought this would run into such an expensive treatment, but we just couldn't stand the thought of having her put down. Hopefully we will receive donations to help cover this expense. Her total skin problem cost to date is $1,395.00. She is doing wonderfully, growing a great coat of hair and only has two small scabs near the base of her tail which are improving daily. She is no longer oozing or itching! She still has never shown any fear of going to the vet's, but proudly prances into their office. All of this bravery in a little 9 pound Peke is amazing. Will update again after her next trip to the vet.

Meet Hershey... Through no fault of his own, we have another Peke that is heartworm positive! It is so sad that he will have to undergo treatment for this preventable illness. He also has a hernia the needs surgical repair. The approximate cost of his heartworm treatment will be $300.00 and his hernia repair will be another $75.00. We once again are asking for help to treat another needy Peke. We also thank so many of our sponsors for being there for them!

We had a call from the City of Houston shelter about a little Peke with a ruptured eyeball. They were willing to release him early on a medical discharge so he could be treated. We immediately got him and took him to our rescue vet. She gave him pain medication and set up surgery to remove his eye for the next morning. She would have done it right away, but was afraid he had eaten or drank which isn't allowed for 12 hours prior to surgery. These little Pekes are so courageous to be in such pain. His surgery went well and he is now on the road to recovery. His name is Buster. Any help with this extra expense would be greatly appreciated. His eye removal surgery was $230.00.

Meet Tucker, a very sweet young male Peke who has had a tough time of it recently. We received an email telling us about a local Peke whose time had run out at a local shelter. They wanted to know if we could possibly work him into our program. With all of the expenses we have had recently with heartworm treatment, we thought that if he didn't need a lot of vet expenses we could handle it. Unfortunately, things didn't work out as hoped. Tucker now has a vet bill that is over $800.00! When he came to us, we took him to the vet first thing and he received his "shots". We quarantine all incoming Pekes for five days at a boarding facility. After he had been at there for two days they called us and said he had to leave because he had started coughing. We then took him back to the vet and she prescribed cough medicine and antibiotics for him. We took him to a kennel where he could be kept in isolation. We got a call eight days later to tell us that his respiratory problem seemed to be getting worse. Back to the vet... He was running a 105 degree fever, was dehydrated and needed to stay and have IV's. More meds were prescribed and he went back to the kennel. Two days later the kennel called and said he had somehow injured an eye and needed to go to the vet. The vet prescribed eye drops and meds for him. The kennel called us several days later and said his eye did not seem to be improving. We were able to get him in the same day at Gulf Coast Animal Eye Clinic where Dr. Hermann said he had two ulcers on his eye. He had to sew the eyelid partially shut so his lid would not rub on the ulcer. He prescribed a special ulcer medicine and Mefoxcin drops to go along with Tucker's antibiotic and pain pills. The two eye medicines were to be put in every two hours. We took him home to our house and he seemed comfortable with us, considering all he has gone through. He had a follow-up visit with Gulf Coast seven days later. One of the two ulcerated areas has healed. He has been cut back to three times a day on his medication and is to return for another check up in two weeks. Hopefully we will get excellent news then. April 23, 2011 Update: Tucker has now been released by his eye doctor and is doing fine. He only has a very small scar, which the Doctor said would not bother his sight at all. HooRay!!!

We received a phone call from a Good
Samaritan yesterday about two Pekes that were running stray in her
neighborhood. She had been able to catch one of them, a male we have
named Taz. She said he did not appear to be in good shape; missing
many teeth, matted horribly, scabs all over the body, and eye
infections. We called our rescue vet when they opened today and made
an appointment for him. Our vet said he is very malnourished and has
bad eye infections from untreated dry eye. But does have a good strong
heart. It will take several months to get these two in decent shape physically. Unfortunately, these poor little Pekes both tested heartworm positive. And what's equally sad, is thinking that what puppy millers receive for selling just one puppy, would have more than bought heartworm preventative for these two Pekes for their entire lives. So once again, please help us have the money to treat them. It costs an average of $300.00 per dog/$600.00 for the pair.

My name is Marty and I'm a real lover. I
especially love to lick bare legs and I do it with great gusto! I also
have a favorite toy. It looks like a stuffed animal with a little fur
around the edges, but hidden inside is an empty 16 oz. plastic water
bottle. Boy do I love to hear the crackle sounds it makes when I chew on
it.

We want to recognize and honor our local Petco. They called us one morning in February to ask if we could help a senior Peke that had been abandoned during the night. She had been left in a crate with a note and half a sack of dog food on top of it. The note said, "Please take care of Sasha. I have health problems and can no longer care for her. This is very hard for me, but, she needs better care. She is a beautiful dog." She had hot spots on her, especially her hip and the top of her head and was wearing an E-collar. Apparently someone that loved her could no longer afford her medical care. Sasha is under our rescue vet's care and is settling in to the routines and doing well with her foster family. We are hoping that when she is ready for a forever home that we will find her that perfect retirement home where she can live out the remainder of her years in comfort and love. Whoever abandoned her apparently cared very deeply for this little lady, but didn't know what else to do. It is sad to think of all the pets that are surrendered every day due to no fault of their own and often through no fault of their owner. At least, this little one has a great chance of a good outcome. |

Bruce's
medical expenses have been met! About two weeks ago on a Sunday evening (November 8th) we had an email from the City of Houston shelter vet asking if we could help a Peke ASAP. It had been brought in and had both eyes hanging out. We had to wait until they were taking calls on Monday before we could arrange to pick him up. No surgery had been done and the shelter vet said they are supposed to wait three days before doing anything to give the owner time to find their dog. We said, "But won't waiting three days guarantee that the dog will lose all sight?" The vet agreed to go ahead with putting his eyes back in. We called Gulf Coast Animal Eye Clinic and got him an emergency surgery appointment that day. The ophthalmologist said the eye replacement went well. The next step was to keep infection away and treat his severe dry eye condition. We had to put ulcer mix drops in his eyes a minimum of six times a day, Cyclosporin drops for dry eyes three times a day, give oral Clavamox twice a day to prevent infection, and give him Tramadol pills, for pain, twice a day. We took him back after four days and he had some reaction to light in one eye. His next appointment was this past Monday and the vet was amazed that he reacted to movement in both eyes. He's doing much better at getting around when he is on leash going for his potty break. Only time and continued treatment will determine how much sight he will have. His expenses so far have come to $275.00. Any help with this delightful little boy's medical expenses will be appreciated. UPDATE December
14, 2009: Bruce went back to the eye doctor again last
week. He can see out of both eyes, though one has a lot of scar tissue
from severe dry eye. UPDATE February 13, 2010: Bruce's eye surgery was successful! Yea! He went back for a checkup this week and the eye doctor said he has limited site in his right eye and a good amount of sight in his left eye. The pressure had been high in both eyes and it has come down to 16 in his good eye, which is a normal pressure reading. The pressure is still higher than the doctor wants in his other eye. He still needs drops put in six times a day plus two pills for the pressure and will have another checkup in a month. He expects his doggie treat after every treatment and gets them! He seems to be feeling really good. We decided he would feel even better with a new haircut, which he is enjoying. He loves being held and will lay his head close to our chest to snuggle better. He certainly doesn't look like the same little Peke we picked up from the shelter three months ago. Without the help of your donations, he would not be at the point he is now. If he could talk, he would tell you "Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!"

Raymond and Cocoa's Surgical Expenses Have Been Met! We have four beautiful Pekes that are
owner surrenders. We took two, Raymond and Cocoa, mother and son, to
our rescue vet today, November 24, since they were having problems breathing. Both
have severely pinched nostrils causing significant difficulty
getting enough air into their lungs with each breath. They both need to have their nostril openings
enlarged. We have their surgeries scheduled for this coming Monday,
November 30th. They are very sweet and well behaved Pekes and will
feel so much better when they can breathe with ease. Surgery costs
will be at least $250.00 each and more if any thing additional needs
to be done such as if their soft palates are to long.

Josie's heartworm expenses have been met. Thanks! Josie is not your typical Peke. She slipped into our rescue because she was facing immediate euthanasia at the shelter. She did everything but turn flips to make sure we noticed her. She is probably a mix of Peke and Tibetan Spaniel. Regardless, she is one cutie pie. Great personality, and only two years old. She weighs 16 lbs and is very friendly. Her foster Dad says she loves to play and she will pat her front feet on the floor when playing. But, like so many we get in, she is heartworm positive. Please help us get her treated so can find her forever home and she can have a wonderful life.

Thanks
to our wonderful supporters, Isn't it sad how defenseless a dog is? Penny is one of the sweetest little girls to come into our rescue. She came to us suffering from severe malnutrition, hair loss, and a yeast infection, yet her tail was still wagging. She only weighs 6 pounds. Her foster Mom said she is so starved for love that she follows her everywhere. I wonder if it might be because she has never known comfort, love and decent food. And the shocker of all, she is not even a year old yet. The vet kept her overnight to evaluate her condition, start her on medications and give her a special medicated bath. Her vet bills have come to $250.00 so far. She won't be able to be spayed until her condition improves. Any help with her vet bills would be appreciated.

She loves attention, lap time and even gets along well with other dogs in her foster home. Such a sweet girl with a very preventable condition, heartworms. Her estimated medical expenses will be around $400.00.

Cookie's medical expenses have been met! Thanks to our supporters! My name is Cookie. Thankfully, I have been rescued by Houston Pekingese Rescue. They are very nice to me here. I have been listening to the people here and the veterinarians they have been taking me to. They feel so sad for me because I have an eye problem, and I tested heartworm positive. They want to do an operation to fix my eye. The eye doctor said that my eye isn't working any more. I knew that because I can't see out of it. He said that he needs to do surgery to remove it. I don't know if I want it taken out but do want it to stop hurting. My foster parents and the rescue people are so nice, I think that I want to have the eye surgery and get the medicine to treat the heartworm infection. I think that I should let them know that since they are so nice to me that I want to be around and feeling good so I can let them know that I love them. They are also talking about finding me a forever home. One where the people will take good care of me, love me and let me love them back. A wonderful home where I can live the rest of my life and not worry about sickness, loneliness, or not being loved. Houston Pekingese Rescue has had a lot of expenses with doggies they have rescued like me. They are worried about paying for my medical care. If you can help us with my medical care, I would feel better just knowing that they can keep on taking care of doggies like me.
Cookie's eye surgery and heartworm treatment are expected to come to about $600.00. If you can help with her medical expenses, please click on the PayPal button above.

Tulip's eye
surgery and follow-up care expenses have been met! Tulip is a little 8 week old Pekingese that is getting off to a rough start in life. A breeder brought her to our house and surrendered her because of the expenses that were going to be incurred from her injured eye. Tulip's eye was severely injured when she approached a food aggressive adult Peke and it attacked her. Her eye is to damaged to save. She is scheduled for surgery to have her eye removed on May 11th. There was no way to put it back in the socket due to the damage that had been done to the back of the eye. We have her on pain medication and an antibiotic until her surgery. The cost of the surgery and post operative care is estimated to be at least $350.00. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Update, May 12, 2009: Tulip had her surgery Monday morning and did great. The vet said that when she woke up she started barking like she was telling them, "Hey, come and pay some attention to me!". She was given a Penicillin shot and sent home with Clavamox antibiotics and Torb Elixer for pain management. She is eating well and resting comfortably. Supporters, we thank you so very much, for without your help we could not do this. Although Tulip doesn't look all that happy in her post-op photo, she is actually doing very well; she is eating and doing her "outside" business as well as wanting to cuddle. For all this little one has gone through at 8 weeks of age, she is a little wonder.

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Rocky has gone to Rainbow Bridge. |
| All of Rocky's medical expenses have been met. Our heartfelt thanks go to all his loving supporters. |
|
Earlier this week, Rocky developed an eye ulcer overnight along with a urinary tract infection. We immediately took him to the veterinarian. Various test were run to diagnose his problems and update us about his autoimmune disease. His red blood cell count was once again low. He had been on a program of Vitamin B12, Prednisone, and Azathioprine to suppress his immune system due to his autoimmune disease. In turn, by having his immune system suppressed, the other problems developed. Due to his autoimmune disease he was still not able to make enough new red blood cells and those drugs could not be discontinued to let his eye and urinary problem heal. The vet said there was nothing else that could be tried to help his immune system and recommended that we allow him to humanely go to Rainbow Bridge. We were greatly saddened by this decision but did not want Rocky to needlessly suffer. We stopped on the way home and got his favorite, chicken livers, for his special supper and breakfast the following morning. After his breakfast, we loaded up and drove to the Vet. She encouraged us to use her Meditation Garden. We went to a bench located there and held him as she gave him the medication to give him final relief. His long hard fight has ended. Rocky is now at peace and will be waiting for all of us at Rainbow Bridge. We want to thank everyone that has kept Rocky in their hearts and prayers for the past 14 months that he has been with us. We had grown to love this little rascal. He never seemed to complain about his situation, showing us his own kind of love and devotion. We will miss him as he left a great void in our home and lives. Just as he has left a piece of his heart with each of us, he has taken a piece of our hearts with him to Rainbow Bridge. |

Rocky definitely doesn't need to be named
"Lucky". We got him from a local shelter, but didn't realize how much
help he would need! First, he needed his hair cut down because of all
the tangles and mats in it. UPDATE, June 19, 2008: Dr. John said my surgery needed to be done as soon as possible since my muscles and tendons continue to atrophy. Even though there hasn't been enough money raised yet for my surgery, he offered to do one hip with a down payment of the amount raised and the balance due in two weeks. My right hip was operated on yesterday. The surgery was a success and I'm already putting some weight on my leg and walking a few steps. My doctor wants to fix my other hip soon. Please help me by donating to my medical expense fund. It will be so wonderful to be able to walk without pain! ~ Love and Nose Kisses to Everyone, Rocky UPDATE, July 9, 2008: I'm on my way to becoming a new guy! The Doc said I needed to go ahead and get my other hip done, so off I went to the hospital. The Doc said this hip was much worse than my other hip. Where the bones had rubbed together had worn down so badly he had to put a pin in this hip. I'm on pain meds and antibiotics. It still hurts, but not so much that I can't get around! I'm doing pretty good at walking when I go potty and using both of my back legs. Thanks to everyone that is helping me with the cost so I can have a new pain free life! I'll send another update after I go back to the Doc in a couple of weeks to have the staples removed. I am proud of everyone's help. ~ Love ya all, Rocky UPDATE, September 26, 2008: Rocky is able to run by using both back legs together but still has problems just walking as he uses a "normal" gait to walk. He will be going back to see the surgeon soon for a check up. We are looking at possibly getting him into water therapy, but have to wait until the damage around here, at least the debris removal has been done. He is grumbling less and giving happy kisses now. Of course, he loves to be held and lays his head on his foster Dad's chest. He surprised foster Mom by giving her gentle finger nibbles.
UPDATE, February 26, 2009: Last Month, we noticed Rocky didn't seem to be feeling well and he stopped eating over the weekend. We called and got him an appointment for Monday, January 26, with our vet. They did an exam and many tests. They found out that he was severely anemic. He was kept for three or four days and given a blood transfusion and I.V.'s. An ultrasound was done and it did find a small mass that was hard to define, but it did not appear to be important. A blood test was also sent off to see if he might have a disease caused by a tick bite. He was put on an antibiotic and prednisone. We gave him two prednisone tablets a day for two weeks and then cut back to one a day. The vet wanted to see him again two days after he was on only one tablet a day. Another blood test was run at that time showing that his red blood cell count dropped again. The vet said Rocky has an autoimmune disease similar to lupus in a human. She again kept him overnight to try a new medicine on him and make sure he could tolerate it. Yet another ultrasound was run to zero in on the small mass, which was o.k.. He goes back again in two weeks - March 4th - for another blood test and exam. Throughout all of this Rocky has been a real trooper and is not ready at this point to "throw in the towel" nor are we. He has had so much to go through to just be two years old! Rocky's new medical bills have come to nearly $1,800.00. Plus, not all of his bills have been submitted to us. We are committed to giving the little boy a continuing chance, at least at this point. He is such a happy little boy and of course he doesn't understand the words; money, finance, recession, expenses, or costs. Update March 13, 2009: Rocky's vet visit for lab work last week showed a drop of five points in his red blood cell count. This was not the news we had hoped for. The vet started him back on a higher dosage of Prednisone and said to bring him back on the 12th for another blood test. We took him back yesterday (the 12th) and received some better news! His red blood cell count had not risen, but his white blood cell count had. The vet said this was good because it indicates that his bone marrow is starting to producing red blood cells again. He has also gained from 14.2 to 14. 6 pounds. He seems to be feeling a lot better. We are supposed to take him back in two weeks for another blood test. Hopefully this little guy will have made further positive progress at his next visit! Update March 26, 2009: We took Rocky back to the vet today. He's still holding his own and no change was made in his medication. His blood level had improved from 35 to 37.5. He doesn't have to go back for more blood work for 30 days. The vet told us to keep doing what we were since he is improving. He appears to be getting stronger and has a healthy appetite. Thanks to all of you that are helping with his expenses.

July 28, 2008: We have another little guy that is undergoing heartworm treatment. His name is Banjo and he's around two years old. It's such a shame that he has to undergo heartworm treatment, when one pill a month, could have prevented it. He had his first heartworm medication (shot) today and it has made him very sore. We had to give him a pain pill, along with his doxycycline and prednisone tonight. He is so very sweet and innocent. This little one loves lap time, actually, any attention. Now he begins his long period of being kept quiet during the heartworm treatment. Update, September 25, 2008: Banjo did very well with his treatment and is now ready for his forever home!

This little guy was picked up as a stray. We named him Opie and he is around six years old. The Animal Control personnel could not begin to guess what breed of dog he was because of the severely matted hair all over him. In fact, it was so bad, they had to sedate him to be able to cut his hair down. That's when they discovered this little Peke hiding under all of that matted coat. Our rescue vet kept him five days to be able to get his skin condition under control. He was discharged with a special medicated shampoo, Malaseb, to be used twice a week for the skin yeast infection. He had already been given an antibiotic shot that will last for two weeks. All of his medical expenses have come to about $250.00.

Howdy, My name is Waco and I'm close to being one year old. I came into rescue and have been a good boy! I think life is a blast and I love to see and do everything. I'm a small guy at 11 pounds and have an unusual feature. My right eye is brown on the top half and blue on the bottom half. My eyesight is fine though. I've had all of my shots, been neutered, and microchipped. Everyone thought that I was ready for my forever home but an eye problem has continued and a skin problem has gotten worse. Foster Mom's Note: Waco's skin condition had steadily become worse! We had to clip him down so we could observe the condition of his skin more closely. We have taken him to the vet's three times for this and his skin is now starting to clear up. Waco had surgery to to help keep his eyes from actually popping out of his sockets. A simple procedure was done three separate times but has not fixed the problem. So we took him to an eye specialist where Waco was evaluated for glaucoma and his prominent eyes. He does not have glaucoma but does need a permanent fix for his prominent eyes. Please use the PayPal button at the left to make a donation. Waco's expenses have come to $620.00 and the more complex surgery to permanently fix his eyes, done by the eye doctor, is another $300.00. Your help is needed to assure that Waco gets the medical care he still needs. UPDATE July 9, 2008: I had my eye surgery the other day... The eye doctor said it needed to be done now, because my eyes were getting worse. They were staying red and irritated and causing me problems. My eyes are already feeling better! I have to have eye ointment put in twice a day and go back to the eye doctor in two weeks. Check out my postoperative pictures! I've also had to go back to the vet to have him look at my skin problem. He said it is just a persistent staph infection and he changed my medication again. Hopefully, this will take care of it!
