Before you Adopt and the Adoption Process

In order to be considered as an adopter, one must:

  1. Be an adult with responsibility for maintaining a household.

  2. Pekingese are inside dogs. Because of their flat faces, they do not handle extreme temperatures well at all. Adopters must have a fenced yard or they must agree to daily walks with the dog on a leash.

  3. Have current identification showing address and/or phone number.

  4. Have the knowledge and consent of all adults living in household.

  5. Be able and willing to spend the time and money necessary to provide for the training, medical treatment, and proper care for the pet.

  6. Have the resources to make a non-refundable donation.

  7. Understand that Pekingese are very sensitive to heat and must not be left outside unattended. Adopter must be willing to consider the dog a member of the family.

  8. Understand that all Pekingese Rescue pets are neutered/spayed.  We do not adopt to homes with intact pets, unless pet is being shown in conformation or there is a verifiable medical reason that pet is not altered.

  9. Place personal ID on the animal as soon as possible.

  10. Provide an environment for the animal that will keep it safe and secure.

  11. Pekingese have been temperament tested at their foster homes and some of these Pekes will not be placed in homes with children under the age of 12. In other words, we will know which Pekes are good with children and which are not. We will not place a Peke that is not good with children in a home with children.

  12. DONATIONS:
There is an adoption donation on all dogs. This is to help us cover the cost of vetting when the dog is brought into rescue. Much of our vetting is due mostly to the numerous Pekingese that need costly heartworm treatment and treatment for eye injuries. Your donation allows us to continue our rescue and adoption efforts. This donation is not refundable. Donations vary according to the expenditures on the dog.

  13. Understand that Pekingese Rescue has the right to either deny or approve your adoption application without explanation.

  14. Out of State Adoptions:
We do adopt to people out of state, however we ask that you come to Texas to meet and pick up your dog. We believe you, too, want to be certain that this is the dog for you, so we ask that you arrange to stay a day or so getting to know your new family member before you travel back home.

Of course, if it happens that your family and the new pet are not compatible, or the pet doesn't get along with your cat or other pets, you are responsible for getting him or her back to us.

People adopting from Houston Pekingese rescue must understand that the organization has no background information on the animal's previous environment, behavioral problems (if any), and medical history.  We can provide a current behavioral evaluation and medical history only.  We are an organization operating as a community service with the intent to do only good and no harm.

Your signature on the adoption contract is your promise to have your dog protected from canine heartworm and fleas.  In addition you promise to provide food, shelter, love, and all medical attention your pet requires.  In the event that you are unable to keep your dog, you are required to inform Houston Pekingese Rescue as soon as possible and to keep the animal until we can find a suitable home or return the animal to us.

When you adopt an animal from Houston Pekingese Rescue, the dog will have a collar and ID tag.  The tag is registered to this organization.  You are strongly urged to have your own ID tags made immediately.  If the animal is picked up and traced to our organization because your tags are not on it, you may not get your pet back.  We accept very few excuses for "loose" animals.
